2.0 H.P.V. Philosophy

The Human Powered Vehicle (H.P.V.), is seen as a future transport for people seeking a healthy lifestyle. The Human Powered Vehicle would be used on normal, bitumized road surfaces.

The H.P.V. is seen to many, as a good learning exercise, in the development of a team of people to understand and express sound mechanical and engineering principles. This is done by working to a design brief, which is governed by the use of relevant construction specifications, by using information, materials and manufacturing systems. The teams are required to test or appraise the vehicle, against others on a closed, supervised and safety controlled circuit for 24 hours.

The "Event requires" teams to plan and devise a race strategy which takes into account many factors, to complete the 24 hour event with an efficient Human Powered Vehicle.

2.1 Specification Compliance

• No vehicle will be allowed to start until it has passed SCRUTINEERING.
• Vehicles must maintain compliance with specifications throughout the event.
• The organisers reserve the right to stop and inspect any vehicle during the event.
• Vehicles may be required for inspection at the conclusion of the event.

2.2 Inherent Safety

All vehicles must have a significant element of design and construction from team members participating in the event.

Designers and constructors please note -

• Vehicles must be inherently safe and kept safe for the duration of the event.
• The design shall provide substantial protection for the rider(s) in the event of a collision or rollover.
• The design shall be free of protrusions or other features capable of causing interference or injury to any person. e.g. Mounting bars/ poles for lights are prohibited.
• Vehicle control shall not be jeopardised by inappropriate design and construction methods.

2.3 Riding Position

• Pedal Prix vehicles are usually recumbent tricycles.
• This position has been found to be reasonably safe in the event of a collision or rollover.
• Any design which places the rider(s) in a position other than recumbent should be submitted to the Australian International Pedal Prix Management Group, at the earliest convenience, for approval.

2.4 Use of Commercially Constructed Frames and Parts

• The use of Go-Kart frames is not permitted.
• The use of Motor-Bike frames is not permitted.
• The use of Bicycle forks and frames is not permitted.
  (except for bicycle centre brackets, head stems and wheel drop-outs where the length of adjacent original frame tubing does not exceed 30mm).
• • If there is any uncertainty relating to commercial components, clarification should be sought from the Organisers before proceeding.
  Designers and constructors are permitted to freely use any bicycle power transmission systems, brake systems, and wheels and hubs etc.

2.5 Workshop Safety

Your attention is drawn to the safe working practices and procedures detailed in the current Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act applicable in your schools/ institutions.

2.6 Wheels

• All vehicles must use bicycle type wheels.

• Vehicles must have 3 (or more) load bearing wheels, all of which must maintain contact with the road surface during normal operation.

• Positioning of the wheels must be such that they are a minimum of 600mm distance from each other, measured at the road contact point.
