Introduction
|
This annual competition
is organised by -
The Technology Teachers'
Association S.A. Inc.,
and the
Engineering Employers'
Association of S.A.
The event provides an environment in
which young people can demonstrate ;
- Innovation Skills, lateral
thinking, enterprise.
- Risk taking, design, planning,
problem solving, entrepreneurial skills.
- Collaborative Learning,
teamwork skills, communication, cooperation.
- Confidence, taking on
challenges, undertaking a task that requires perseverance
and commitment, but is achievable.
- Appreciation, understanding the
nature and the relationship of human power and
alternative energies to materials and manufacturing
systems.
The event is ;
- Generating enthusiasm, industry
and commitment amongst students.
- Giving practical relevance to
many areas of study.
- Encouraging cross-curriculum
linkages.
- Bringing together a broad
cross-section of people to plan and work cooperatively.
- Generating other linkages
between educational institutions, business, industry and
community groups.
There are two parts to the competition ;
- Designing Making and Appraising the
construction of the vehicle, during the construction
period, before race day.
- Testing the endurance of the vehicle
and team against others over a 24 hour period. Prizes are
awarded by judges accordingly, as major and minor prizes.

For 1997, teams will compete in two
classes:
Class A
- vehicles wholly designed and constructed
by members of the team.
AND
- Category 1 vehicles ONLY

N.B. Class A Vehicles and Category 1
vehicles are eligible for ALL awards.
Class B
- vehicles that have been entered before,
or new vehicles modified, supplied and or built by someone other
than team members.
N.B. - Class B is only eligible for an Best
Presented and Endurance Awards,
Fastest Lap Awards ONLY.
Diversity and innovation are openly
encouraged by the organisers.
Vehicle types are ;
- Human Powered Vehicles (H.P.V.).
- Hybrids (H.P.V. with supplementary
power source(s))
Configuration of rider(s) for H.P.V.s and
Hybrids to be safely seated and operating or in control of the
vehicles can be either -
- Single Seat type (SS).
- Commuter type with two or more
seats (COMM).
N.B. - HYBRIDS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE
CONSTRUCTED OR RACED BY CATEGORY 1 TEAMS.
Teams entering are sorted into four age
categories
- Category 1 Primary
- Category 2 Junior Secondary,
where all team members attend secondary school, and are
under the age of 16 years of age before race day.
- Category 3 Senior Secondary,
where all team members attend secondary school, and are
under the age of 18 years of age before race day.
- Category 4 Open/ Adult
